We took a little road trip earlier this month to go photograph Kari and Gene's wedding in Primghar, Iowa--Kari's hometown.

On April 30th 2008, Our friend Bryce and the 849th MAC returned from being stationed in Iraq. It was an incredible privilege for us to be asked to document the day, and to participate in the joys of the families reunited with their loved ones.
I admit it, I totally cried.

Andrea and Scott were married last month in Minneapolis, and even though it was still a bit cold outside, it was such a fun day that no one seemed to mind.
They chose the Reidel Farm Estate for their intimate brunch wedding. With a full service espresso bar, an amazing brunch menu, and a dixieland band, how could you not have a great time?
Even better (in our biased oppinion of course), they took plenty of time for their photographs--even planning a little time after the wedding to come play at the Guthrie Theatre with us. :-)

April Showers and Wedded Bliss

Chad and Amee were married early this month at Northwestern College in the midst of one of our beautiful Spring rains.

Much to my delight, the awesome couple didn't let the rain stop hamper their joy in the day--or our photography plans (I love you guys!) and we had an amazing time capturing their wedding-day photographs. Even more fun, they gave us an extended time with just the two of them to get some really romantic glimpses of their relationship. Here's a sneak peak at some of my favorites from the day.

Dietrich (our pound pup) and I went for one last "farewell to winter" snowy walk this morning... Isn't he just adorable. I've never had a better--or crazier dog in my entire life. We just love this guy!

The Polar Bear Plunge

Earlier this month I had the privilege of photographing the Polar Bear Plunge at Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis

Participants raise money for the Special Olympics by being sponsored to jump en-masse through a hole cut in the ice. While I'm not ready to shed my camera and jump into the icy water yet (remember, I'm from Oregon, I'm still getting used to all these Minnesotan traditions!)--it sure was a blast capturing it for posterity. Here are some of my favorite shots from the day.

a Winter Wedding

This past weekend we were blessed with fantastic Weather for Chas and Laura's wedding!

Laura looked absolutely stunning!!

At their "First Look" Laura and Chas shared some tender moments before the ceremony...

Not only that, but they were brave enough to play in the snow with me!! (putting them well up on my list of favorite people) Check out this romantic shot we found outside the church.

Immediately after the ceremony Chas gave me this priceless look... I just love it!

Playing around some more in the snow... Poor Laura in her sleaveless dress did an amazing job, not complaining about the cold at all!

"I say chap, nice monocle." :-) More playing around. We had an eyepatch too... but I'll spare you the really goofy stuff for now.

We had a great time last week hanging with Anna, her mom Julie and sister Rebecca.

We started Anna's senior pictures with a bookstore as Anna is an avid reader (a girl after my own heart!) Mager's and Quinn in Uptown was kind enough to let us play in their shop for a while--I'm really happy with how they worked out.

I love smiles--but I've become a huge fan of a serious look or two as well... the color here is just yummy...

Well our busy wedding season is in full swing--and we're loving it!

While it has left us little time to keep up on things like blogging (sorry everyone!) it has been a blast working with our couples this year. I swear, we have the best clients ever!

I'm going to try to catch up on the blogging here over the next few days. On August 1st, we're heading to Louisiana for Julie and Evan's wedding August 4th. Back home on the 5th, and back to work right away... We just finished a bridal session with Julie--and wow!~ so much fun! I won't post any of the images until after the wedding (we don't want her husband-to-be to get a sneak peek at the bride), but I can't wait to share some of them with you.

For now, let me introduce you to Mandy and Noah. Such a sweet couple! We had a great time over at the lakes and uptown--and finished things off with a cup of coffee while talking over wedding details.

Wedding Talk on NPR

Talk of the Nation had an interesting segment yesterday about weddings.

Toward the end there's an interview with Mark Eric founder of www.trashthedress.com about Trash the Dress sessions post wedding. This has been getting a lot of attention lately, having been on Good Morning America and other local and national news sources.

Trashing the dress is actually more of a buzzword than the reality. Most dresses do survive the sessions quite well, and after being cleaned one wouldn't even know that they had been subjected to sometimes extreme situations.

There are two schools of thought among photographers about trash the dress images.
One set wants to see the dress become as trashed as possible, if the dress doesn't get extremely dirty (and often the bride as well), it doesn't qualify for them as a trash the dress session.

The other side of the fence (where we land on the issue) is looking to create artistic and beautiful images that can be preserved for generations. We like to do this after the wedding, so there is less worry if things get a little dirty. Because we are searching for beauty in these sessions, we have dropped the "trash the dress" termanology as we feel it doesn't communicate to our clients our goal and methods. We simply call these our "Afterwards" sessions.

In bygone years, it was much more common for a daughter to wear her mother's wedding dress. That rarely happens these days, and often the dreses are simply boxed up and stored away with no future purpose.

We feel that it is much better to risk a little dirt and have images and memories that can be displayed and treasured--after all--the real memories to be treasured are not of the dress itself, but of the experience of wearing the dress.

There's a lot on my mind tonight. I'm just finishing a album design and working on some lovely wedding pictures.
It's late, and bed is starting to sound very appealing, but I just love finishing a design. There's something so fulfiling about seeing a book come together, telling the story of new beginnings, love and family. I just love the whole process.

I am so thankful to be able to do what I do. God has provided for us in some amazing ways this past year, and we are looking forward at some really fun changes and growth--both in our business and personal lives.

I'm really looking forward to this summer. We are working with so many amazing and fun couples. Each one is so unique and beautiful--I can't wait to tell their stories.

Yesterday was a crazy double-header with two events booked back to back. All said and done, I was on the run for about 19 hours straight!

I started the day working with over 400 grade-school aged kids from Saint Paul. Can I just say, I love that age--especially the K through 3rd graders... they are so cute and so much fun. I ended the day at The Depot in Minneapolis as a contracted photographer for "Shecky's Girls Night Out" This was a fun event sponsored in part by KS95. They had some awesome vendors there with really beautiful products.

Love in October is a great local band that we had the pleasure to work with last year. The guys were a lot of fun--and had some awesome ideas, including using the couch on First Ave!

Braving the cold

It was a cold April morning when I met Tahran and Jason for their photo session yesterday. They met at Northwestern College, and so we thought it would be a perfect spot for their engagement pictures.

Tahran and I go back a few years to our Starbucks days (good times!), but this was my first time meeting Jason and I was so glad I did--they are so cute together!!
We had hoped to make it into the chapel, but it was closed for Good Friday, so we shot a few inside and then braved the wind and the cold to get some great outside shots!

I have more super-cute pictures hiding on my computer waiting to be edited--but here's a teaser--I've saved the ones by the stream for later, but I'm totally loving those too! I can't wait to show you!

It's the middle of March, and for many people that means that wedding plans are in full swing.

As you're planning your menu, flowers, dress and decorations, don't forget to think ahead about some of these ways you can plan for your wedding photographs. You'll be thankful you did.

1. Waterproof Mascara
I can't encourage this enough. Most people cry. Most likely you'll cry--if not at the moment when your dad start walking you down the aisle, then what about the time that your love looks into your eyes and vows his lasting love?
I cried at my wedding--of course I've been known to cry at other people's weddings too... Thank goodness for waterproof mascara.

2. Rice or Blotting Paper
Women don't sweat, they glow. However, that's not that glow you want in your wedding pictures. Make sure to bring some blotting paper to get rid of that shine on noses, cheeks and forheads. News flash, it's not just for girls! If the guys in your group are prone to shine, bring along a little extra for the whole party.

3. Choosing Flowers
Especially if you are having your photographs done after the ceremony, choose flowers that will take the heat. While it's fairly easy for your photographer to remove a skin blemish from the best-man's forhead, it's a lot harder to fix droopy, wilted flowers. This is especially important during the mid-summer months. Talk to your florist as they can help you put together a stunning AND hardy arrangement.

4. Don't forget the food
If it is going to be a while between breakfast and your mid-day reception brunch, be sure to bring along snacks for the bridal party. I've known plenty of people who can't even force a convincing fake smile when the inner tiger is grumbling. Make sure that you and your party and happy and comfortable. It will show later.

5. Time enough
After the DJ packs up, all the left-overs are sent home with Auntie May, and the decorations are given to your second cousin for her wedding next March, your photographs will be what brings you back to the memories and feelings of your wedding day. Make sure to take the time now to sit down and think about what you want out of your wedding photographs. What is your story, and how do you want your day recorded?
Be sure to take time to evaluate your priorities, what you would like to see in your wedding album (Lots of informal shots of family and friends, the two of you together, formal shots of your family etc...) and communicate that to your photographer. This will help your photographer make suggestions about the schedule and time needed for different styles of photographs. In the end, your album, and your memories will be much more personal because you did.

Jonathan and I used them when preparing for our own wedding, and I get all of my current stationary products there. The selection is wonderful, and there are many sample ideas for you to browse through. Not only is the selection top-notch, and the pricing reasonable, but they also have great people there to help with ideas and problem solving.

I had such a great time with Bronwyn and Kelsey yesterday! We headed over to Downtown Minneapolis, spent some time in the Scupture Garden and headed over to the Stone Arch Bridge.

All I can say is "wow!" These gals were so fun to work with. I had a hard time choosing some of my favorites to post! I decided on these two for now!--just check out those amazing eyes--and more will be posted later.

Time for a post about editing.

When I began my photography career... I must admit, I never thought I would spend quite this much time in front of a computer monitor. After all, I'm a people-person, I love being outside, and I really like my on-location portrait sessions. I was so excited to leave my desk job, that I never thought I would be exchanging it for another one. :-)

What I discovered though, is that in order to really make my work stand out from the crowd, and in order to give the best product I can to my customers, I needed to spend some time inside making the magic happen on the computer screen. Thus began my head-long dive into the world of digital editing. It's really been a fun ride--looking back on it--and it seems that every week I learn a new tip or idea that helps improve my speed and the options I can provide my clients.

I've been blessed with some great people that have been helping me along the way. My brothers Rob and Jeff are those wonderfully technically inclined types, who often help me turn my ideas into reality--and show me how it's done along the way. My husband is gracious and doesn't begrudge the hours upon hours that I hide in our office working on images, and I've had the benefit of a great online community that inspires me with the amazing work that's posted daily.

So what do we mean by the "digital image enhancement" that we offer on our portrait sessions?

Take this picture for instance, when I shot it, I loved the colors, and the moment that the two of them are sharing, but with a little work at home. I was able to bring out even more of the vibrancy of the moment.

Every final image we provide our clients is hand-adjusted to bring out the color and brilliance we think looks best. This can be a time-intensive process when it's done for every proof, but it's another service that you get included in all of our portrait and wedding sessions.

Well that's all nice and fine you say... but what can you really do?

Give us a challenge! When you have someone dealing with your priceless family memories, you want to be sure that they can handle the job. Here's a recent request that we were able to fulfill for a great client and friend of ours.

When we took Rick and Kim's pictures this past fall, we were mostly looking for a great family shot. Kim had some awesome ideas (you can see a few more on our website), but when all was said and done, this was their favorite picture of the two of them.

So Kim wondered if there was any way that we could crop in on just her and Rick... I told her that I would look it over and see what I could do. a few hours later I was able to come up with a solution that both of us loved.

This is an example of the digital editing that we are able to offer our clients. Most tasks are simple, removing skin blemishes or wrinkles, adding different effects, or creating custom cards for holidays or celebrations--these things have a minimal charge associated with them--and we'll often do them free of charge when you order a print from us. Other things (such as removing people from a picture) are more difficult and are billed at $30/hour. Whatever editing you need done, we're here to help you look your best!

It was soooo cold!! but definitely worth it!

Winter Fun

This Saturday I had the opportunity to hang out with two super-fun couples out in Downtown Stillwater. It was definitely on the chilly side, but they held up great and we got some really fun shots.

This is a great example that even in the winter, you can still have a blast with both indoor and outdoor photography.

Jonathan and I had the opportunity to travel to Portland Oregon over Christmas to visit my family. While we were there, we were able to take some time away to see the sites.

On Saturday, Jonathan and I had the opportunity to do our first band shoot with "Love in October" a local emerging pop-rock group.

Fun with Noah and James

What could be more fun than kicking it with a four month old and his proud older brother? :-)

We had a great time with little James and proud older brother Noah--that kid has oodles of personality for being under 3 feet tall.

I love kids, they are probably my favorite photography subjects with their unabashed zest for life and lack of self consciousness. They're happy about who they are and flaunt it for the camera. Just look at those fabulous blue eyes!

What a whirlwind of a weekend as we headed down to Moline IL for the Aubrey wedding. It was beautiful! Rachel and her mother designed her lovely dress, and the whole church was a part of the celebration.
